Coda:
Five (5)-Car Garage

Soulphisticated Lady, 4513-15 S. Greenwood, was designed based on the analysis of Duke Ellington’s 1932 masterpiece Sophisticated Lady. Sophisticated Lady is a blues infused piece that comes to life through the arrangement of Duke, featuring the alto sax, clarinet, and trombone on top of the rhythm section’s Banjo. The poetic structure of the music is A-A-B-A, where Ellington masterfully utilizes a progression of five (5) chords in a Diminuendo or descending fashion. There is a piano introduction, a piano interlude and a saxophone coda. In jazz lore, it’s believed that three (3) of his grade-school teachers inspired him to write this piece. The Intro, (entrances) were ultimately inspired by Thelonius Monk’s 1966 version of Sophisticated Lady; where Monk actually repeats his introduction, hence, two (2) entrances. The interlude is actually expressed approximately three-quarters of the way east on the north elevation in the form of the master bathroom Bay. The Coda is the custom Five (5)-Car Garage where the use of limestone is restated.
